Music as Medicine:

Alleviating Symptoms of Combat Trauma

Our beloved nation suffers the great loss as service men and women attempt to brave their post-war trauma and its accompanying uncertainties. Understanding this heart-breaking and gripping need for practical treatment with compassion, American citizens are marshalling their resources, both personal and professional, to minister to our wounded warriors through music. Programs addressing these concerns encompass grass-roots efforts to provide musical instruments to veterans, all the way to government-sponsored musical events. What follows is Part One of a Three-Part Series which looks into some of these opportunities for soldiers to enjoy a greater measure of recovery than was available to their comrades in arms from wars past. “It is ‘Our Time & Our Turn’ to offer our support to our veterans … who are in recovery from service-related injuries.” - Ann M. Wolf Ms. Wolf provides spiritually-inspired music missives honoring those who have offered their very lives for the protection of Americans. Her music with a message speaks to the physical and emotional pain faced by our soldiers as they serve their country and fellow man. Her organization, perfectly named, is Our Time & Our Turn. A veteran soldier turned country music singer is putting his songwriting and performance skills to work by focusing on veterans whose boots he’s walked in, during his own four-year military experience. Stephen Cochran’s time of rehabilitation inspired him to share his method of encouragement on stage and in the studio. His desire is that other veterans will heed his message to reach out at times to grab the hand of fellowship: "You've got to talk," said Mr. Cochran. Fellow songwriter Daniel Dean agreed: "I've had a lot of military friends, with a lot of issues, and it's a real thing. Music is a good therapy. I think it is the one thing that keeps me sane.” Part Two of this Three-Part Series will explore music lessons and performing arts opportunities for veterans.
